An In-Law Suite in Middleton
Challenge
A couple has a beautiful home in Middleton, Massachusetts. The husband owns a pizza shop in a neighboring town and loves to cook. His mother-in-law is planning to move in with them, but their house doesn’t have an existing space that would be comfortable for her. For this reason, they would like to make her a full in-law suite in their currently unfinished basement. This will require adding a bedroom, bathroom, living room, office, and kitchenette to the space.
Solution
We made a bedroom exit through the garage to offer a more accessible entrance than the basement stairs. We added an above-grade egress window in the space beneath where their porch is and removed the lattice that was blocking a portion of the view. We added another exit in what became the living room, which led out to the backyard. This resulted in a finished, accessible in-law suite with ample lighting.
