Getting Crafty With a Basement in Stoneham
Challenge
A couple in Stoneham, Massachusetts, are buying the multi-family home where their daughter lives now. Their daughter lives on the second floor, and although they plan to live on the first floor, they would like to finish their basement for additional space. The wife intends to use most of the basement as a family room and place for crafting. Some challenges in the layout of the basement will have to be addressed before it becomes usable. The first obstacle is that they have unattractive ducts hanging from the ceiling. There is also a break in the wall behind their existing stairs, which will need to be remedied.
Solution
We began this project by running a drain to connect the break in the wall behind the stairs. Since the basement was reasonably tall, at over 8 feet, to cover the unattractive ducts, we installed our linen ceiling tiles beneath them. We used our vinyl wall system, added a composite shelf for storage, and changed the old windows with new egress windows. Finally, because the electrical panel was upstairs in the kitchen, we had to add a subpanel in their basement utility room. This resulted in a clean, finished basement with plenty of space for entertainment or crafting.
