A Family Room For a Family Home
Challenge
A homeowner in Andover, Massachusetts, is married with two children and would like to finish his basement. This home is special because it’s a family home, with the original owners being his grandparents and his father following the project closely. The basement, as it is now, is very humid, encouraging mildew and mold to grow. It has outdated stairs and a sump system that is over thirty years old. The homeowner would also like to use the basement as partly a workroom, as well as a mudroom and family room.
Solution
We turned the ample basement space into a main room and a smaller mudroom. The mudroom had ceramic tile, a full light exterior door, and, most interestingly, a dog washing station. This ensured their family pet wouldn’t create too many messes in their new working and family areas.
In both rooms, we used our paintable system, painting the doors and walls. We changed the stair treads, making them oak, and coordinated the handrail with the light Pecan-colored ElitePlank flooring we used. Finally, we replaced the existing sump pump as it was too old and not fully functioning any longer. This resulted in a gorgeous family room, a workspace for the homeowner, and a beautiful new tiled mudroom.
