A carefully engineered basement
Challenge
A kind couple with kids and a friendly dog live in an older home in Melrose, and need more space for their utilities! Their basement is unfinished, unclean, and very cluttered. They have a gas meter, electrical panel, and water running along the floor at the base of the stairs. They also have a tangle of low pipes and joists that make them wonder if they can finish the basement. They need a lot of changes done to make it usable.
Solution
We needed to give them another sink, a second bathroom, and a lot more light to make the basement somewhere they felt comfortable going into. We also added a platform at the base of the stairs to cover the running water, and framed the other utilities, which could still be accessed with two doors. Although the pipes came down too low to install a ceiling, we sprayed them in a beautiful black paint. This allowed the joists to show and left the character of the older house intact.
