Beautiful Basement Apartment For Mom!
Challenge
This couple from Concord, Mass was looking to create an additional living space within their home so the wife’s mother could move in with them. For her mother, they were looking to transform their existing basement space into a full in-law apartment, complete with a bedroom, bathroom, living room, and kitchen! Comfort and accessibility were both keys, as well as providing a separate entrance to the apartment. However, we had to clear out the old before we could go in with the new.
Solution
The first step of this project was something we always have to do when the job is this big: demolition. To make room for the new space we had to rip out the existing drop ceiling, as well as the sheetrock. This gave us a clean slate to create a beautiful space for the incoming in-law. For the bathroom, we put in Mantra shaker cabinets as well as a seat within the shower to improve accessibility. Using our vinyl wall panels and dark walnut Elite plank, we finished the remaining spaces for the living room, bedroom, and kitchen. To make it truly seem like a real apartment, we then installed an exterior door leading to the garage so their mother could come and go as she pleased. Now she can have as much family, and as much privacy, as she pleases!
