Basement Apartment Convinces Grandpa to Move In!
Challenge
These homeowners were facing a situation many have gone through - seeing their parents age in their old homes and have trouble taking care of themselves. The father wanted his dad to move in with his family, so they could be closer as well as to make sure that he had everything he needed in a safe environment. His vision for the new finished basement was a full basement apartment for his dad. It would include a master bedroom, a full bathroom, and a living room. This will allow the grandfather to be as comfortable as possible, and finally convince him to come live with the rest of the family. Last but not least, his dog would be coming with him, so we had to create a space for his dog outside to rest and be comfortable as well.
Solution
TBF not only wanted to let the grandfather move in with the rest of the family, but wanted to afford him every comfort we could. We took care to make sure every part of the apartment was accessible as possible to make things as easy as possible for him. To do this we installed 36” doors around the basement in case a walker needed to be used, and in the master bath, we installed a shower with a seat. But looks were also important. To finish off the space nicely we used Everlast Paintable wall panels, a white linen drop ceiling, and pecan colored Elite plank flooring. As for the grandfather’s dog, Blackdog Home Services was able to construct an outside dog house, so their new family dog could enjoy the property! Now the whole family can be together while still having their own personal spaces and privacy.
