Making a Dark, Uncomfortable Basement into an Inviting and Well-Lit Space!
Challenge
Client has a basement that was framed and insulated by the previous owner themselves, which had outlets but lacked something very important - overhead lights. There is also a space for a washer and dryer, but it was very cramped and made it very difficult to remove the appliances should it be necessary. Overall, the homeowner does not enjoy using the space and wishes it was more comfortable.
Solution
The homeowner was referred to Total Basement Finishing, A Blackdog Affiliate, by a friend who was very satisfied with his newly finished basement. Our mission for this project was to make this space somewhere that the homeowner could enjoy. We started with installing a linen drop ceiling complete with 10 LED ceiling lights and two light switches. For the walls, new baseboards and crowns were installed, as well as a PVC cap on the knee wall. Oak stairs(Dusk) were installed to match the floor(Espresso), and a new Nevada window was installed to replace the old and outdated one.
Moving on to the washer and dryer issue, the space was completely redone. The doorway was widened and reframed to improve access and allow removal of the appliances if need be, and a standard opening was fitted to allow the installation of bifold doors to close off the space when not in use. By the end of the job, the homeowner was pleased with his new stairs, walls, ceiling and lights, and laundry space. What was once a dim, cramped space is now a comfortable, well lit, and often used basement.
