Decorate Your Finished Basement

If you have an empty finished basement, or if you’re planning on finishing your basement in the near future, you’re probably super excited about putting the final touches on your new space.

But basements can be challenging places to decorate! How do you turn windowless walls and low ceilings into welcoming and comfortable rooms? We’ve been working on basements for a while, and we have a few great ideas for you!

1. Lighten up!

When you choose colors for your space, remember that basements are usually darker than the rest of your home. Unless a home theater is part of your plans, choose bright and light colors to make sure your space doesn’t feel like a cavern. The majority of our finishing products at Total Basement Finishing fit this light and bright color pallet, so that can take a bit of the guesswork out of choosing colors.

2. Supplement overhead lighting with lamps.

Overhead lighting is great for basements because it allows for great light coverage for an entire space. But overhead lighting creates dramatic shadows and lacks an element of coziness. When you add lamps to your space, you create a warmer ambiance, eliminate shadows, and softly brighten things up.

3. Fill the space!

An interesting design rule most people forget: if you’ve got a small space, filling it with furniture will make it appear bigger. Since basement rooms can be small or awkwardly shaped, it’s best to fill that space with large furnishings. Avoid large ornate furniture, as that style can appear cluttered, but large simple furniture will make a small room look bigger.

This is one of my favorite examples of basement decoration, from the homeowners we’ve worked with. This family followed all of the basement design tips. They also created additional interest in the space with a patterned carpet and floor to ceiling bookcase. With a few great choices, they made their basement feel warm and welcoming!
